Linkhorne Middle School Students Share Their Experiences Working as Virginia Page
Middle school students have several years to go before they are old enough to vote, but two Linkhorne Middle School students have proven that they aren’t too young to get involved in government anyway. Haley Garrett and Matthew Haske were selected to participate in the Virginia Page program this year, and as part of the program, they worked in Richmond alongside their state legislators. “One of the most valuable experiences middle school students can have in terms of experiencing government is the Virginia Page program,” says their LMS civics teacher Aaron Carroll, who encourages many of his students to apply. Students in middle school are learning about all aspects of government. They focus on ways that citizens can influence decisions, especially at the state and local level. LMS civics students this year have the unique opportunity to hear directly from their peers about how state government operates and how citizens can impact decisions made at the state level.
In order to participate in the program, students submit an application with an essay, recommendation letters, and an endorsement letter from their state legislator. The application for the 2020 session will be available on August 1, 2019.
