Adequate Yearly Progress Information

Public School Choice

What is federally mandated public school choice?
The Virginia Department of Education identifies schools that must provide Public School Choice. The identification is made when a school does not meet federal Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP) for two consecutive years as measured by student performance on the Virginia Standards of Learning (SOL) assessments. Schools that miss one or more of the 29 required targets are considered to have missed AYP for the following school year. This is true regardless of the state accreditation earned by the school.

Which schools have been selected as receiving schools for 2011-2012?
Schools may be designated as receiving schools if they are not anticipated to be in school improvement, are not designated as schools for innovation or year-round schools, and are within a reasonable distance of schools in School Improvement. For 2011-2012, Sandusky Elementary, and Sheffield Elementary are receiving schools for Heritage Elementary, Perrymont Elementary, and R. S. Payne Elementary. Paul Munro Elementary, and Sheffield Elementary are receiving schools for Linkhorne Elementary.

Will transportation be provided to each receiving school?
Yes. The school division will provide transportation to the receiving school as long as the child’s home school remains in School Improvement status. If the home school makes 100 percent AYP two years in a row and exits School Improvement status, the child may remain at the receiving school through the fifth grade, but the school division will not provide transportation to the receiving school.
