Sixth Grade US History
This course covers the history of the United States from pre-Columbian times until Reconstruction.
1st Six Weeks
Geography: Continents and Oceans, Geographic Regions of North America, Rivers and Bodies of Water.
Native Americas: Inuit, Kwakiutl, Sioux, Pueblo, Iroquois.
Explorers: Columbus, Cabot, Coronado, Champlain, La Salle.
2nd Six Weeks
African Empires: Ghana, Mali, Songhai.
Early Settlements: Roanoke Island, Jamestown, Plymouth, Massachusetts Bay, Pennsylvania, Georgia.
13 Colonies: New England, Middle and Southern Colonies. Colonial People.
3rd Six Weeks:
Relationship between the American Colonists and England.
Causes of the American Revolution: French & Indian War, Stamp Act, Boston Massacre, Boston Tea Party, First Continental Congress, Declaration of Independence.
Colonial People: King George III, Lord Cornwallis, John Adams, George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Patrich Henry, Benjamin Franklin, Thomas Paine, Phillis Wheatley, Paul Revere.
Battles: Battles of Lexington and Concord, Battle of Saratoga, Surrender at Yorktown.
4th Six Weeks:
Articles of Confederation: First Constitution and its Strengths and Weaknesses
U.S. Constitution: Replace Articles of Confederation. Legislative, Executive, Judicial Branches. Separation of Powers, Checks and Balances, Federal System. Bill of Rights and Amendments
First Five Presidents: Washington- Washington D.C.(Benjamin Bannaker), First Political Parties (Federalists v. Anti-Federalists), Fedral court system established.
Adams- Only one of the first five presidents not from VA (from MA).
Jefferson- Louisiana Purchase
Madison- War of 1812
Monroe- Monroe Doctrine
5th Six Weeks
Louisiana Purchase- bought from France by Jefferson. Explored by Lewis & Clark
Florida- Obtained from Spain in a treaty.
Texas- Became an independent country and then part of the U.S.
Oregon- Divided by the U.S. and Great Britain.
California- Obtained with the Soutwest Territory after a war with Mexico.
Geographic and Economic Factors that influenced westward movement.
