6TH GRADE U.S. HISTORY I CLASS GUIDELINES       25 August 2008

Dear Parents and Students:     Welcome to Linkhorne Middle School.  My name is William L. Burnham and I am very happy to have the opportunity to work with your child this year in the study of U.S History.  We will be covering U.S. History from pre-Columbian time through 1877.  This is a substantial amount of important material, and will require everyone’s cooperation to help insure an efficient learning environment in the classroom.  In order to facilitate a great learning environment, I would ask your help in making sure your student understands the following guidelines:1.      Be seated and ready to go with all materials and notebook out at the tardy bell.2.      No food or drink allowed in class.3.      Raise your hand and wait to be called on before speaking.4.      Wait to be released by the teacher at the dismissal bell.5.      It is the student’s responsibility to make up any and all missed work due to an absence within three days of return.  Work not completed within three days will receive an incomplete or zero. Make up tests are given after school.  6.      For class infractions only one verbal warning will be given.  If the inappropriate behavior continues, a detention or referral will follow.7.      There is ample time between classes to get all your materials from your locker and use the bathrooms if required.  It is extremely disruptive to the class for students to come and go during instruction, so this will not be allowed except in an emergency. 8.      As soon as the bell rings answer the question of the day that will be on the board.  Then copy down the homework assignment for that evening that will also be on the board.  These will be graded. 9.      Everything that is put up on the board or on the overhead is important and should be copied in the student’s notebook.  It will be on the tests and quizzes.10.  All homework, class participation, quizzes, tests, and class notebook completeness count towards the student’s grade.   Notebooks will contain all the information covered in class, handouts, notes, maps, and drawings.  Notebooks will be checked and graded periodically.11.  Every Monday the student will be given 10-15 vocabulary words to copy into their notebook.  Homework every Monday night is to make flash cards for each word and definition.  These words have been carefully chosen, and are critical to your child’s understanding the material.   The student will receive a grade on Tuesday for completing these flash cards. I would ask that you help make sure your child completes the cards, and review these words and definitions with your child for the vocabulary test given on Thursday or Friday of each week. With your help, I look forward to being able to have an exciting and interactive classroom environment where each student can reach his or her maximum potential for academic and civic excellence.  This will only be possible with your help in insuring your child knows and follows these guidelines.  Please sign the classroom procedures, and have your student sign them and return them to me by 2 September 2008.  If you have any questions please don’t hesitate to call me at 434-384-5151 ext. 505 or email me at burnhamwl@lcsedu.net .   Thank you for help in insuring we have a great year.
