This Week In Science: (Dec. 8- 12) December 8th, 2008

Earth Science:

H.W.- Definitions Chapter 20 Due Thursday

We are completing an online investigation of the solar system this week in the computer lab. Students’ creativity will come alive as they imagine being a tour guide and design their own travel brochure for various destinations such as planets, the Sun, black holes, crab nebula etc.

Principles of Science:

H.W. - Definitions Chapter 18 Due Thursday

This week students will investigate the exciting biomes and ecosystems around the world as well as the interactions that take place between living and non living things. Students will explore the biomes and ecosystems during an online research activity. Students will use this data to write an article documenting information that they felt was interesting on one animal and one ecosystem. Later in class we will draw food webs and pyramids for each ecosystem and its inhabitants. This is an exciting way to study the world around us while embracing the technological society we live in! Don’t you agree?

* As we near the end of the 6 weeks, students are encouraged to work very hard to complete all make up work and submit it for grading ASAP!! I would like all tests and other make up work to be completed by Friday November 21st to avoid incompletes on the end of six weeks report cards. I am available after school everyday this week so that we may accomplish this goal. Thank you for your cooperation.

Earth Science: We are continuing our study of the ocean.  Last week we focused on Chapter 13 ocean motions (tides, waves, etc.).  This week we will study more of the features found within the ocean Chapter 14 (trenches, ridges, plates, ocean zones and the organisms that live in the various ocean zones).

Last weeks H.W.- Chapter 13 Definitions

This weeks H.W.- Chapter 14 Definitions

Test on Oceans Next Week (Tentatively set for Tuesday, so that we may review on Monday) !!!! Study both chapters to ensure success : )

Principles of Science: This week we continue our study of Evolution and the work of Charles Darwin. In class we are discussing topics such as the theory of natural selection, fossils, adaptations, extinction, and the Galapagos Islands. I understand that this topic can be somewhat controversial. For this reason, I stick strictly to the information written in the textbook and the Virginia Standards of Learning.  Please know that I make a concerted effort to establish clear lines  between theories and scientific facts. I remind students of the difference between the two several times daily. Students are simply being exposed to theories and works of some famous scientists.  Mainly, we study the ways that all living things can change or evolve over time.  Essentially, we are studying evolution on a very small scale. Feel free to email me at school if you have any specific concerns. As an incentive for a job well done with this chapter, students will be making fossils next week using plaster, sand,  natural/household  items, and their school milk cartons :)

**Any materials that can be contributed (Sand, Small Sea Shells, Plaster of Paris) are GREATLY appreciated, but not required!!!!

Last week’s H.W.- Definitions Chapter 12 , finish the crossword puzzle that was started in class.

Reminder- Students should be leaving their textbook at HOME to use for studying!!! We now have books to use in the classroom :-)

* Today’s cloud watching was a great success!!! Thank you to all parents who lent their children towels and blankets for sitting outside and watching the sky. The weather finally cooperated and we were able to observe all sorts of weather conditions and factors.  I think this was an excellent example of the exciting discoveries that await us in our own backyards!
