Mundo Explorers
Our Spanish program called, “Mundo Explorers” will deliver our school’s mission through the use of a FLEX model. FLEX stands for Foreign Language Exploratory. Lipton (1995) mentions the following descriptions for the FLEX model:
· The FLEX model is also called language awareness, and permits a wide variety of formats and time and scheduling patterns.
· It emphasizes cross-cultural appreciations and contrasts.
· It is primarily a language/cultural/motivational program.
· It promotes interest in future foreign language study.
· There is a high correlation of foreign language study with social studies, language arts, art, music, and other areas of the elementary school curriculum.
Our Mundo Explorers program integrates with the art program to provide real-world hands on activities for the students. Our Mundo Explorers program also provides lessons from Teaching Tolerance. Teaching Tolerance is dedicated to reducing prejudice, improving intergroup relations and supporting equitable school experiences for our nation’s children (Tolerance.org, 2008).
