This is not your dad’s shop class. Lynchburg City School’s Career-Technical Education program is preparing students to be quality and competitive employees in Lynchburg’s workforce. And the city’s business leaders know the importance of the career-technical program. Those leaders took a tour of the Career-Technical Education programs LCS has to offer during an Open House Tuesday, December 15, 2009.
The tour began at Heritage High School with a look at the building trades, computer systems technology and networking, cosmetology, and marketing classes. The tour ended at E. C. Glass High School with a look at the dental careers, medical assistant, engineering and nuclear technology, and precision machining classes. After the tour, the guests enjoyed lunch prepared by our culinary arts students and music from the Glass Jazz Ensemble. Division instructors were joined by twenty-five members from both the school and business community including:
- Delegate-elect and current city council member Dr. Scott Garrett
- Mrs. Marjette Upshur, Director of Lynchburg Department of Economic Development
- Mr. Nat Marshall, Director of Human Resources for Babcock & Wilcox
- Representatives from Region 2000 Technology Council, Southern Air, AREVA, Craddock Cunningham Architectural Partners, Laslie’s Auto Body, and other Region 2000 businesses will be in attendance.
- Five School Board members: Rev. Keith Anderson, Mrs. Mary Ann Barker (School Board Chair), Mrs. Ingrid Hamlett, Mrs. Treney Tweedy, and Mr. Tom Webb (School Board Vice Chair)
Our Guests learned about the exciting opportunities available that help our students prepare to become members of the workforce and valuable community members. We have developed our programs with the input from local companies to help fulfill their future workforce needs.
