American Education Week was a big hit at Lynchburg City Schools last week, and the real winners of the event were the kids.
In addition to school tours on Tuesday and twenty-one community volunteers shadowing LCS teachers on Thursday, parents and loved ones played perhaps the biggest part in making the week a success when they came to eat, read and participate in activities with their children.
On Friday, Paul Munro said 171 grandparents came to the school to eat lunch with their grandchildren. Linkhorne Middle School counted more than one hundred moms and around fifty dads having breakfast with their children during the week; Sheffield Elementary on Tuesday welcomed 130 parents of Kindergarten through second graders to their “Create and Keep Forever” event, where the parents made books with their children; and Perrymont (162), Bedford Hills (126) and Sandusky Elementary also had more than one hundred guests, all there for the benefit of the kids.
A great deal of success is also credited to the hard-working cafeteria staff, who provided meals for all the paying guests. In addition, every staff member at every school was allowed one free meal of their choice during the week.
Nearly all schools reported at least fifty loved ones visiting to celebrate American Education Week with their children and show support for their schools.
- Dearington had about fifty parents on Tuesday eat with their kids;
- Dunbar Middle had about sixty throughout the week;
- Heritage Elementary had about fifty throughout the week;
- Linkhorne Elementary had twenty parents throughout the week;
- Payne had about sixty-eight parents and grandparents on Tuesday;
- T. C. Miller had about thirty throughout the week.
