Sarah Phillips of Linkhorne Middle School will take a trip to Washington D.C. in May, where she will represent the region in the Scripps National Spelling Bee.
Sarah earned a spot in the national contest when she nailed the word “egregious” at the News & Advance Regional Spelling Bee. It was her first time participating in the regional bee.
Twenty-five top spellers from around the area competed, including students from Lynchburg City Schools, area private schools and Campbell, Amherst and Appomattox county schools.
The event was held in the Paul Laurence Dunbar Middle School for Innovation auditorium on February 18. It was judged by Mayor Joan Foster, News & Advance opinion page editor Logan Anderson, and City Council member Turner Perrow. Monique Crawley of the News & Advance served as director.
The national spelling bee will be held May 27-June 4, 2012.
