LCS and Education Foundation staff surprised E. C. Glass High School senior Elizabeth Hayes at her school with a full scholarship for the Engineering Technology Program the student will be attending at Central Virginia Community College next fall.
Elizabeth is a student in the E. C. Glass Nuclear Engineering class. After completing the engineering program at CVCC, she plans to continue studying engineering at either Virginia Tech or University of Virginia. She aspires to have a career in nuclear or mechanical engineering.
John Fees, the donor of the scholarship and Chairman of the Board of Directors for Babcock and Wilcox, presented Elizabeth with a certificate and said her hard work and dedication to the field of engineering led to her selection for this honor. He also invited Elizabeth to contact Babcock and Wilcox upon starting her college career, to seek internship opportunities. Elizabeth said interning with B&W was something she’d always hoped to do, and being told she could do that in the future was very exciting.
About the Fees Engineering Scholarship
The Fees Engineering Scholarship is given each year to a senior at E. C. Glass High School who will be attending the Engineering Technology Program at CVCC. This is the 2nd year that Mr. & Mrs. John and Jill Fees have offered this very generous scholarship. This scholarship is for full tuition, books, and fees and is renewable for a second year upon the student maintaining a 3.0 GPA or better. Students applying for this scholarship needed to provide school and community activities they were active in during high school, including offices held and honors received. Applicants also needed to provide an essay that included their interest in pursuing an engineering degree along with their goals for the next five years. In addition, references were required, including a reference from any STEM (science, technology, engineering or math) discipline who could speak to the student’s ability to succeed in an engineering curriculum.
Last year’s recipient was Spenser Grandstaff.
