GARDEN-From Kris Lloyd
If anyone is interested in signing up to water the garden and harvest for a week, here is the signup. We ask that you water three times during the week you choose and you are free to harvest any flowers and veggies. I do all the weeding so this frees me up to concentrate on that. No gardening experience needed and I will send specific instructions. It is very easy and a good entry into gardening if you have thought you might like to learn more about flowers or veggies. I will also divide the iris and other plants (definitely hostas) the last day of school. I would like to make a rainbow of iris (Greek Goddess of the Rainbow) in that bed in the garden where it is basically mostly white, so if you have any to share I might take a little. I have yellow, maroon, blue, and white right now. If you have any other colors please let me know. I would like the large bearded iris.
I will have hosta because the big tree was taken down last year and some of the hostas do not like full sun. I am going to take some out and put a butterfly bench in that corner for reading, etc. I am also putting in a couple of pussy willow bushes that can be cut in the winter. I have them now and will probably plant this weekend. Due to that huge tree, we have never really used that corner so now it can be used all year. If you have any other ideas for the corner, or any where in the garden, let me know.
Also, we have a new mason bee house in the garden. It is the wood house sitting on the hose box next to the 2/3 hall. A mason bee is nesting. If you open it you can see - it is an observation hive. They are very placid bees and live alone. I have lots more info about them that I need to go through and hope to pass it on. Feel free to check it out and google mason bees if you do not want to wait for me. The kids are welcome to look at it but we need to leave it over there so she can find her nest when she leaves. She also likes a south facing entrance and a certain height with some cover which is why it is under the soffit and on the box and pointing the way it is. I am a novice but if you are interested in learning more, let me know. They are such nice bees because they nest in spring and we will be able to harvest her cocoons in the fall, keep in the fridge and then release them in the spring. It sounded like a fun project and I thought the students would enjoy it. Any question please feel free to call, text or email. Thanks for all your help and support this year! It is lots of fun!
