At Lynchburg City Schools, we strive to create the best possible environment for student success. To support this, the Lynchburg City School Board recently voted to update our policy on personal electronic communication devices, such as cell phones, smartwatches, and earbuds.
Beginning January 6, 2025, when students return from winter break, the use of personal electronic devices will be prohibited during the bell-to-bell school day for all K-12 students. This includes:
- From the start of the school day until the final dismissal bell
- Lunch periods
- Time between classes
In addition, elementary students may not use personal communication devices while on school buses, unless approved by the bus driver.
This policy update will ensure greater consistency across all grade levels and will further enhance our schools as spaces for focused, meaningful academic and social growth.
For more information, you can view the policy here. Violations of this policy may result in progressive disciplinary action.
We are confident that with your support, this policy update will positively impact our students' learning experiences and help us achieve our shared goal of academic excellence.
The School Board also voted to update Policy JGD/JGE Student Suspension/Expulsion to include the following language: “...a student who directs language or a gesture that is vulgar, profane, obscene, or abusive to a teacher, staff member or volunteer at any time during school or after school hours albeit on or off school property the student shall be considered for expulsion in accordance with applicable laws.”
