The Lynchburg Museum will be open free of charge on Friday, February 7th from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. as it features Dunbar High School.
The Museum will feature a rare collection of photographs, memorabilia, administrative documents, newsletters, news clippings, and programs that has never before been displayed to the public related to the history of Dunbar High School. The collection was compiled by Dunbar graduate Carolyn Brown who was secretary to C. W. Seay, the principal of Dunbar from 1938-1968. This collection is a treasure trove of information that would be virtually impossible to recreate today. Dunbar High School played a key role in Lynchburg’s African American community for almost 50 years. In 1970 the school was desegregated and transitioned to what today is the Paul Laurence Dunbar Middle School for Innovation.
The Lynchburg Museum is located at 901 Court Street and it is on the free trolley route that loops between participating attractions during First Fridays. The photographs, documents, and memorabilia will remain on view on Saturday from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. and Sunday from noon to 4:00 p.m.
