Dear Staff/Parents/Guardians,
Our priority through this COVID-19 pandemic is to provide excellent educational programs and services while maintaining high standards for the health and safety of our students and school community. Out of an abundance of caution and in consultation with the Virginia Department of Health (VDH), Linkhorne Elementary School will shift to remote learning for all students. The building will be closed for students on Friday, August 27, 2021 and Monday, August 30, 2021. The plan is to reopen Tuesday, August 31, 2021, provided we have the necessary staff to ensure the safety and supervision of our students.
VDH stated that Lynchburg City Schools is doing a good job deploying infection control mitigation strategies within Linkhorne Elementary School and it does not appear there is any significant SARS CoV2 transmission within the school itself. The cases we are seeing are the result of community-based transmission.
This decision was not made lightly and we understand that this may be a hardship for some families, however, the health and safety of our students and staff must be taken into account. We have shared our plans with the Virginia Department of Health and together we believe this is the right step to take for the health and safety of our students, families, staff, and the community at large at this time.
While Linkhorne Elementary School is in remote learning:
- Students are expected to attend and participate in classes remotely. Attendance will be taken daily and students must either attend a synchronous session or complete and turn in work by 7:00 p.m. in order to be counted present.
- Synchronous opportunities will be provided for all students. Teachers will be sending links via email and Seesaw (Kindergarten-2nd Grade) or Google Classroom (3rd-5th Grade) at the following times:
Literacy Lesson

10:00 a.m. 1st and 4th Grades

Additional work for Literacy and Math and material for other subjects will be pushed out through Seesaw for Kindergarten-2nd Grade and Google Classroom for 3rd-5th Grade. Students and families who need help logging onto either Seesaw or Google Classroom should contact their homeroom teachers.
- Students in grades 1 and 2 who need a device can stop by the school and pick up a Chromebook on Friday, August 27, 2021 between the hours of 11:00 a.m.-2:00 p.m. Distribution will take place outside, at the front entrance of the building.
- Breakfast and lunch will be available to students through curbside pick up at the front entrance of Linkhorne Elementary School from 11:00 a.m.-1:00 p.m. on Friday, August 27, 2021 and Monday, August 30, 2021.
Linkhorne Elementary School will continue to closely monitor our students and staff for COVID-19 exposures. Should you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to contact me at (434) 515-5240.
