This is your Board Meeting Brief for the September 13th Joint City Council/School Board Meeting.
Superintendent Dr. Crystal Edwards shared some highlights and updates from the opening of schools. This school year, LCS added 6 additional seats to the Governor’s School for high school juniors, and for the first time, seats were added at the CTE Academy. Dr. Edwards recognized the Virtual Academy which has over 206 students in which 50 of the students are new to LCS. Additionally, Dr. Edwards reaffirmed LCS’ commitment to hiring and retaining staff by offering incentives, sign-on and retention bonuses, and tuition reimbursement.
We are working diligently to make working conditions favorable for our staff. If we want talent we need to invest in building talent. We need to work with our staff to develop talent in our community and in our schools.
Deputy Superintendent Dr. Reid Wodicka and Acting Deputy City Manager Kent White discussed the LCS facilities master plan update and school safety. The master plan will focus on how our school buildings contribute to the instructional goals, social and emotional development, and academic goals of our students. A joint team of LCS and city staff will focus on four areas which include educational programming, student populations and neighborhoods, building assessments and long term planning, and funding and analysis. The joint team will work through the fall and winter and will provide framework options to the public for community input in the first quarter of 2023.
Academic Achievement was originally planned to be discussed, but due to time constraints, this will instead be presented during the School Board Work Session on Tuesday, September 20th. Learn more information by watching the 9-13-22 Joint City Council/School Board Meeting on our LCS YouTube channel.
